We made the long long flights, got our visas and made it thru customs with all our bins and luggage ~ our leaders said it was the smoothest customs entry they had ever been thru! Then, there I was....my first breath of the warm Kenya air and the biggest white smiles (by most) and then military with machine guns yelling at everyone to get moving! I felt like Harry Potter with my cart and all my luggage while I had the biggest smile on my face like a little kid at Disney world!! Three large vans along with our hosts were there to greet us and pack all of our bins and luggage into and ontop of vans that we then piled into!! My driver told me I could sit in the front (since I get kinda car sick) and my American self hopped into the front seat...however, this one had a steering wheel! Joe, our driver politely laughed and said if I wanted to drive I was more than welcome or else I could get in the real passenger seat!! That was my first blond moment of many (the next one is coming soon)!
| the most amazing moon i have ever seen |
So, we began driving and there were stars galore and the moon was bright yet had an amazing haze like I had never seen before and I couldn't stop smiling and staring out the window and taking in the sights and smells of the busy Nairobi all while driving on the opposite side of the crazy road!
In about the first 20 minutes as I glarred out the window, I saw a zebra statue in the middle of the road and thought 'how cool! we don't even have pretty statues in America on our highways!' BUT (blond moment) then the statue began to move and run down the road and I literally screamed with excitement to my friends in the van & pointed and jumped up and down yelling " A ZEBRA"!!!
They all loved my excitement since it was my first trip and first time to a third world country they said, "just wait Kandice!" I hardly slept a wink that night...part of me was so excited and eager to start it, and another part of me became home sick immediately. We spent the night in a hostle like place and had a good breakfast of eggs, toast and tomateos with juice and water! Off we were on our first 9 hour drive to a town called Kitale to work at an orphange!
